LYC Opening

25 Apr

Hello LYC!

I hope you enjoyed your day of summer here in Michigan yesterday…now it’s back to a week of rain, cold, and wind!

A lot has been happening these last few weeks.  I will try to summarize by committee responsibility as best I can.  Apologies in advance if I neglect to mention something or someone!

House:  The water was turned on a few days ago without incident.  Gary, Chico, and Steve Leedham washed and waxed the floor.  Becky is hard at work getting the bar stocked and ready to open soon.  The committee (Commodore Jim McGee is the chair) ordered new chairs for the dining area. A crew consisting of Al Buck, Steve Leedham, Tom Bell, Don Cochran, Rich Kirby, & Gary Ferguson received the chairs, removed packaging, and added Scotchgard.  Jon Ferguson (Gary & Kaye’s brother) donated 30 bar stools to replace our old ones and for use in the new addition.  Speaking of which, the addition is moving along nicely toward an early May completion; thanks to Gary Ferguson for overseeing this project and completing the wiring portion and to Alex Zaydel and Dave Golder for taping the overhead lights prior to painting. Overhead will be white and walls will be paneled similar to the existing clubhouse.

Grounds:  As mentioned in a prior newsletter, Jon Ferguson donated a new flag pole that was installed by Bob Kesling and Gary with assistance from Jon Erickson earlier this spring.

Docks: A large crew consisting of Steve Wegener, Don Cochran, Steve Leedham, Jeff Yeager, Ken Wierenga, Alex Zaydel, Jim McGee, Gary Ferguson, & Denny Lavis removed the ice eaters, washed, and put them away.  The boat club moved their docks so all slips are now available for LYC members…and all are filled for the 2022 season.
Membership:  As of this writing, we have 198 memberships either paid, or in the cue for membership (first or second readings in May).  This translates to 356 members.  Everyone (except for member applicants) should have received their membership cards.  Please let me know if you have not.
Social:  The club will officially open on Friday May 6 for Cocktails at the Club starting about 5:30 p.m.  This will be followed the next day Saturday May 7 with a Kentucky Derby Party.  Specific information about these events will be available very soon.

Your social committee members for the 2022 season are: Sheryl Baun (chair), Gail Kretchman, Guen Hultman, and Andy Hamilton.  They have big plans!  In addition to a full slate of dinners (the event calendar is attached), they wish to have the LYC membership step up big time to support the Ludington High School Student Resource Center.  For the past several years we collected donations at our last event of the year and have been quite successful.  For 2022 here is what they propose:

LYC members,

We are looking for your support this summer in raising $5000.00 for the “Ludington Schools Youth Resource Center”.  We will be hosting two events for the purpose of raising funds:

The “Kick Off to Summer Cocktail Party” June 17th.

Social Committee sponsored dinner July 9th.

Our wish list,

  • If each membership donated  just $25.00 we will reach our goal of $5000.00;
  • A member or members to cover the food costs for the Social Committee sponsored dinner;
  • A member, or better yet members, to match the donations dollar for dollar or .25, .50 cents on the dollar.

This way we may even exceed our goal.

Checks can be made payable to: Ludington Schools with “Youth Resource”, noted on the MEMO line.

We would be happy to accept your check during our monthly meetings, at the bar when Becky is on duty and at our two fund raising events.

Thank you for your consideration in supporting The Ludington Schools Youth Resource Center.

Sheryl Baun and social committee members.

Ludington Youth Sailing School:  The first Fergburgs in support of the sailing school will be May 17 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.  Format will be similar to last year: burger and choice of 2 of 4 sides.  Alternate Tuesday’s will feature Lake Michigan salmon chunks, fries, and coleslaw.  Schedules are attached.

Registration for the summer sailing instruction sessions are coming in on a daily basis.  If you have children or grandchildren that are interested in the school, you are highly encouraged to sign up early to get the session you want.  Sign up at:  https://www.ludingtonyouthsailingschool.org

Membership meeting:  Tuesday May 3 at 7:30 p.m. at the LYC clubhouse.
