Upcoming at LYC

31 Aug

For those of you who shop Amazon it was brought to my attention that the Ludington Youth Sailing School is listed on Amazon Smile as a charity to which Amazon will contribute 0.5% of eligible purchases when you shop through Amazon Smile.  Check it out!

Tuesday, September 1: Fergburgs from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in support of the Youth Sailing School.  There will be burgers to order as usual and a choice of 2 different sides (potato salad, cole slaw, beans, or cream corn).      Order and pickup at the south kitchen door.  Seating is outside on the deck, picnic tables, or bring your own chair & table for the yard.  Or, grab & go!  One person at a time (mask required) will be allowed through the west deck door to order from the bar.  Since this is a fundraiser for LYSS, membership card “punches” will not be honored; cash or check will😀.  $10 per person.

Tuesday September 1:  Membership meeting – 7:30 p.m.  Due to the continuing executive order on gatherings, only Flag Officers and Committee chairs can be present at the indoor meeting.  Others can attend outdoors on the deck (nice evening forecast, windows open).

Wednesday September 2:  Corona Cup Sailboat Racing series continues.  6:00 p.m. start at the pier head.  If you wish to race or catch a ride, be at the club by 5:30 p.m.  Contact Tim Tibbits (231-690-0961 or email ttibbits2092@gmail.com) for info.

Tuesday September 8:   Alternate Tuesday fundraiser for the sailing school.  Jill Kaines and Gail Kretchman are serving up “Potato Pigs” consisting of a baked potato topped with BBQ pulled pork, cheese, bacon, and green onion with sour cream on the side along with a side salad for $10 per person.  Since this is a fundraiser for LYSS, membership card “punches” will not be honored; cash or check will😀.  Serving from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Always available to go or outdoor seating on the deck and picnic tables.

Saturday September 12:  Bloomer Cup Sailboat Race.  Contact Dale Fitch to volunteer.

The Bloomer Cup is scheduled for Saturday, September 12.  Because of the Covid 19 pandemic this year, the event will be different from the past since we cannot have large groups inside the club.  The major differences are:

·         There will be no Friday night event

·         All events on Saturday, September 12 will be outside of the club.

·         In lieu of the normal dinner, we will have food available prepared by the Fergburg crew from the youth sailing

school at the normal cost of $10.

·         Race entry fees will be a donation to the Youth Sailing School with LYC being reimbursed for expenses of the race.

Permits have been requested from the USCG and the DNR.  The Coast Guard has responded that no permit is necessary, so we are good to go.  We will again be using the weather buoy as a mark, so the marks we set and the committee boat location will be along the shoreline.

HELP NEEDED!  This event is a major undertaking and here is where club members can help.

We need a power boat to set marks on Saturday morning.  This needs to be done approximately 8 am and should take less than an hour.  The boat should be equipped with a GPS and a 12 volt socket to power our air pump.  In addition, we need 3 volunteers to set the marks.  This involves inflating the marks, setting them, and recording the coordinates.  It would help if at least one of the volunteers could help with GPS navigation.

Race Committee.

We need a Committee Boat.  Again, this should be a power boat large enough to have a committee of 4 volunteers aboard to anchor at the starting mark and remain on station throughout the race.  We need at least 4 committee boat volunteers. No experience necessary, detailed written instructions will be provided.

Retrieve race marks.  After the conclusion of the race, we need volunteers to retrieve the 2 race marks and return them to LYC.  Marks are inflatables and anchors are small, so this is not a big deal.  If I must retrieve the marks, that delays the calculation and announcement of the race results.

Committee members.  I would like to have 3 or 4 volunteers to help with race committee issues from now to the date of the race.  We are planning to use the PHRF rating system and are currently discussing whether we need to have separate starts for the divisions.  There are several issues that will come up as we learn more about how many participants we have.

Clean UP.  The event will be primarily outside the club this year, but we should have a cleanup committee to make certain that the club facilities are cleaned on Sunday morning.

You may contact Dale Fitch at Dale@LetsGoSail.com or call him at 231-425-0305 if you’d like to volunteer for any of the above or if you have any questions.
