Last weekend we had a great Bloomer Cup weekend.  Starting Friday evening with pizza and drinks to welcome all to LYC the party got off to a rousing start.  Although the actual race was postponed until Sunday, a few hearty sailors (Zach Miller, Andy Klevorn, & Steve Clare) took the LYSS Sunfish sailboats onto PM Lake in front of the club to entertain the early attendees to the Steak Fry on Saturday evening which, by all accounts was a resounding success.  Thanks to Dale Fitch, Jim Ricklefs, and the entire kitchen crew (Mike & Connie Robinson, Alex & Linda Zaydel, Ken & Diane Hill, and Sherrie Gartside, apologies if I overlooked someone) for staging yet another delicious event. One hundred rib eye steaks were sold.  Thanks to Becky Erickson for the outstanding bartending job as always.  Our “house band” was pretty awesome as well, thanks Jon and Bill!  A special touch was added by Ken & Diane Hill with vocals on a couple of numbers.

The race itself on Sunday was met with light NNE winds and was limited to one time around the triangular course in Lake Michigan.  The red flag was raised at precisely 12:05 p.m. by officials on the committee boat (thanks Jim & Marina McGee for the use of your boat and snacks and Micky Slocum and yours truly as timers) and the race was underway.  Less than an hour later, Jay Muller’s “Das Boot” crossed the finish line to take first place in the spinnaker division, followed by Pentwater boats, “Baby J” (Dave Dice) and “Condor” (Dave Bluhm).  First place in the main & jib division went to “Shiplap” (Michael Bourke) followed by “Serendipity” (Dave Golder), “Freedom” (Dale Fitch), “Poppy T” (Tim Tibbits), “Harmony” (Jeff Laman), “Dragon Fly” (Gary Ferguson), “Adelecia” (Connelly Bowling), and “Seas the Day” (Bill Edwards).  Congrats to all owners, skippers, and crew for a great race!  All were safely back at the club prior to an intense thunderstorm that followed the fleet in.  Bragging rights continued into the evening hours following the race as many awaited the end of the storm as an excuse to stay.

Tim Tibbits also wishes to announce the final standings of the Thursday night sailboat championship series for this summer’s 14 races.  Top boat was “Serendipity” (Dave Golder) followed by “Poppy T” (Tim Tibbits), “Harmony’ (Jeff Laman), “Dolce” (Ken Wierenga), “Scrimshank” (Les Kaines), and “Dragonfly” (Gary Ferguson).

Lost Item:  Patrick Brugger reports that he lost a YETI ice pack (see attached picture).  It came up missing from the left refrigerator freezer in the club.  If anyone has seen it or knows where it might be, please contact Pat (patrick.brugger@complog.com or call 616-676-9147). 20210913_132548.jpg

Bloomer Cup Weekend at LYC

BLOOMER CUP WEEKEND – September 10-12
Begins Friday September 10 with Cocktails at the Club beginning around 5:00 p.m.  Please bring an appetizer to share if you desire and welcome visiting sailors.  There will be pizza too!!!

The Bloomer Cup Sailboat Race is on Saturday September 11 (alternate bad weather date is Sunday September 12).  The Captain’s meeting is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. and the first start is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.  Entry forms are attached and all sailors and boats are welcome.

The traditional Steak Fry, open to all members and guests, follows the race. NO RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.

Preparation of the steak is a “grill your own” affair on the back deck of the club.  Food will be available beginning about 5:00 p.m. The steak fry dinner will occur on Saturday regardless if the Bloomer Cup goes or is postponed to Sunday due to weather.

Live music starts at 6:00 p.m. and continues into the evening.

We have a special liquor license for the weekend that allows non-members to purchase beer, wine, and spirits across the bar.

This is a perfect opportunity to remind everyone that our liquor license only allows consumption of  beer, wine, & spirits purchased across the LYC bar to areas inside the clubhouse and outside on the premises that is bounded by the seawalls (west, north & east) and to the south by the parking lot; note the docks are outside this area and drinks purchased at the bar cannot be consumed there as well. Consumption of beer, wine, or spirits purchased elsewhere is NOT allowed in these areas.  You can, however, bring and consume beer, wine, & spirits purchased elsewhere to your boat and on the docks.  Please inform all guests and visiting sailors of these rules.  Fines to the Club for violation of this basic Michigan Liquor License Control law can be significant monetarily and result in the suspension of our license for a period of time.
